TIRYNS, THE CITY BUILT BY THE CYCLOPES.
“The wall, which is the only part of the ruins still remaining, is a work of the Cyclopes made of unwrought stones, each stone being so big that a pair of mules could not move the smallest from its place to the slightest degree.” [Pausania – Description of Greece,2.25.8]
TIRYNS UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 was one of the great cities of the Mycenaean era. The first settlement dates back to the Bronze Age but reached its splendor between 1500 BC and 1200 BC.when it was one of the most important centers of the Mycenaean world, and in particular in Argolis. Its most notable features were its palace, its cyclopean tunnels and especially its walls, which gave the city its Homeric epithet of “mighty walled Tiryns”. In ancient times, the city was linked to the myths surrounding Heracles, with some sources citing it as his birthplace
“Molto tempo fa piccole pietre furono inserite in modo tale che legassero con fermezza i grandi blocchi” [Pausania – Periegesi della Grecia, 2.25.8]
“Long ago small stones were so inserted that each of them binds the large blocks firmly together.”[Pausania – Description of Greece,2.25.8]
Approaching the walls of Tiryns is truly exciting, the unfortunately neglected state of the site (part of the walls and the famous west stairway were closed) still leaves the impression of the magnificence they had in the past and the sense of fear that they had to give to those who approached it. Its walls is formed by blocks of stone that weigh up to 13 tons, about 750 meters long, and they have a thickness ranging from 4.5 to 7 meters, in some sections up to almost 10mt.
The characteristic that makes these walls unique are the famous tunnels inside them, a series of tunnels that allowed the displacement of the troops: “We also cleared a part of the great gallery on the south-east side, which at the top forms a sharp corner, finding a surprising floor made of a layer of clay, we also freed one of the niches or windows made as doors that are in this gallery, and in part three other galleries similar to this one. ” [Heinrich Schlieman, In the ruins of Tiryns – [The discovery of Troy]
– It is 1.65mt wide and cuts through the external wall that is 11m thick in that area. The side openings led to corbelled store rooms which served as cisterns.
IL PALAZZO – THE PALACE
The city of Tiryn was first destroyed around 1250 BC and with it also its famous palace. Who or what has been the architect of the destruction of the city is still an international debate. These incidents appear to have prompted the massive strengthening and expansion of the fortifications in various sites. The fate suffered by Tiryns is similar in terms of timing and modalities to the destruction of other cities, Mycenae, Pylos, Thebes and Midea, all of which were destroyed by fires. None of the defense measures, however, seems to have prevented the final destruction and collapse of all Mycenaean states. A second destruction struck Mycenae and Tiryns in 1190 BC or shortly thereafter. This event marked the end of Mycenae’s power and the site was later repopulated but on a smaller scale. The Pylos Palace, in the southwestern Peloponnese, was destroyed in 1180 BC and the Linear B archives found there, preserved by the heat of the fire that destroyed the palace, mention hasty defense preparations due to an impending attack without providing details on who and where it came from.
The acropolis at Tiryns was built in three stages. The first was in 1400 BC when the palace was built on the highest part of the hill. During the second stage 1300 – 1250 BC a cyclopean wall was constructed to protect the central section. Between 1250 and 1200 BC the walls were extended to provide protection for the whole site
– The famous megaron of the palace of Tiryns has a large reception hall, the main room of which had a throne placed against the right wall and a central hearth bordered by four Minoan-style wooden columns that served as supports for the roof.
