Fish in Greenlandic Waters, Banknotes, School Savings, and Additional Value Stamps

Fish in Greenlandic Waters - Part IV

In the fourth part of the Fish in Greenlandic Waters series, the two stamps depict two very different specimen. The first stamp depicts the Lumpfish, which is a quite common fish in Greenlandic waters, especially around Uummannaq and Tasiilaq, where they feed primarily on plankton, larval fish, jellyfish, and crustaceans.

The females have a darker grey or green shade with lighter bellies, while the males are typically grey-brown with white bellies. The female typically grows to 70 centimeters, while the male grows to 40 centimeters. Once the female spawns, the male will stay with the roe until they hatch, which usually happens within 7 to 8 weeks.

The second stamp features a different beast entirely - the Greenland Shark. These sharks are quite common in the North, where they lurk in the deep - sometimes at depths of up to 1200 meters. They vary in sizes, ranging from 2 to 8 meters, and the largest Greenland Sharks can weigh up to 1100 kilograms. The sharks have a very varied diet, eating pretty much anything they can find - sea birds, various fish, marine mammals, and even other sharks.

The two stamps depict the fish on a neutral background, bringing focus to the fish themselves, and the impressively detailed stamps are created by artist Martin Mörck, the world-renowned stamp engraver, who has created more than 100 stamps for POST Greenland. You can get the souvenir sheet directly from POST Greenland, where you can also get the stamps as a set, sheets, FDCs, and with the various cancellations available.

Old Greenlandic Banknotes - Final Issue

On February 22nd, the final issue in the series on old Greenlandic banknotes was issued. This multi-year series concludes with the artistic recreation of the 100 kroner note, which dates back to 1953, when it was designed.

The stamp itself carries a detailed portrait of the famous polar explorer Knud Rasmussen, who is well-known for his expeditions across the Arctic, especially his famous fifth expedition, which originated in Greenland, crossed through Canada and Alaska, all the way to Siberia. A trip of more than 18.000 kilometers, undertaken solely by dog sled.

The stamp is part of a beautiful souvenir sheet, which depicts the old Greenlandic banknote, notably featuring Mount Thule, and Knud Rasmussen on his dog sled expedition. The Banknote also features the signature of A. W. Nielsen, the director of Royal Greenland Trading Department between 1951 and 1956, and this is the only banknote that carries his signature.

The Greenlandic banknotes were in circulation between 1955 and 1967, after which they were replaced by Danish banknotes. You can buy the souvenir sheet directly from POST Greenland, along with all FDCs, sheets, and cancellations available. If you want the stamp by it self, you can get that as well.

Additional Value Stamps - Greenlandic Centres

Every year, POST Greenland issues an Additional Value Stamp, which has a surcharge of 1.00 DKK. The stamp is created in cooperation with an organization that POST Greenland chooses and the proceeds from the additional value are then given to the organization, in support of their great work.

This year, the additional value stamp is created in cooperation with the Greenlandic Centres in Denmark. The Greenlandic Centres consist of four locations, distributed in the major cities of Denmark - Aalborg, Aarhus, Odense, and Copenhagen.

The centres have several functions each, as they work as institutions where Greenlandic people in Denmark can come and spend time with their country fellows, as well as institutions aimed at broadening the knowledge of the Greenlandic culture and heritage in Denmark. The centres also offer a range of services, such as assistance to Greenlandic students who are new to Denmark, and a a wide variety of social activities.

The 2021 Value Added Stamp features a quite striking design, even if the colors are calm. The design cleverly depicts the Greenlandic Centre in Copenhagen, as characterized by the doorway arch, which is a prominent feature on the building, and which forms the basis of the stamp.

As the viewer looks through the door into the Greenlandic Centre, instead of seeing an office, we see just a tiny bit of the Greenlandic nature, luring us in, making us want to see much more. This cleverly depicts the Greenlandic Centres as an entry point for everything Greenland has to offer.

The 2021 Value Added Stamp is available both as a single stamp, and as a souvenir sheet. The souvenir sheet comes with four Value Added Stamps, and depicts all four of the Greenlandic Centres in Denmark, in a wonderful mix of beautiful historic buildings and wondrous new structures. The souvenir sheet, and all the formats, cancellations, FDCs and more, can be found directly at POST Greenland.

School Savings Coupons - Part II

The second part of the Greenlandic School Savings Coupons issue, which was started in 2020, was issued on February 22nd, and features another two stamps in the series. The stamps celebrate the Greenlandic savings program that ran from 1881 to 1976, and through which Greenlandic children had saved more than 7 million DKK by 1930.

The stamps are designed by artist Nina Spore Kreutzmann, and are adaptations of the original saving coupons, created by artist Alex Secher, which all depict the development in Greenland up until 1957.

The stamps have a great way of incorporating the landscape and the effect that humans have on the landscape. In both of the new stamps, the landscape plays a large role, as the background is dominated by a massive mountain, and snow covering the ground. The human influence on the landscape is depicted in red, with all buildings and ships colored uniformly, highlighting our presence. You can buy the set of stamps directly from POST Greenland, along with all the sheets, FDCs, and various cancellations available.
