A medieval church in Wales dating back to the 12th century will be going up for auction in February, with a guide price of £135,000.
St. Mary’s Church in the village of Whitson is a Grade II listed building and is thought to have originally been a chapellage of the Benedictine Priory at Goldcliff. Parts of it date back to 12th century, and it also includes a 15th-century tower.
However, in more recent times the building has fallen into disrepair and is missing much of its roof. The new owners can convert the church into a residence – planning permission obtained in December last year is for the development of a two-bedroom dwelling with open plan living area, kitchen to the ground floor, two bedrooms and bathroom to the first floor and further accommodation within the tower.
Whitson is situated in southeastern Wales, with the city of Newport being approximately 7 km away. The village itself is home to about 300 people.

“The church is in the village of Whitson which is situated on the serene Caldicot Levels where there are a number of farmsteads and houses,” explains Sean Roper, of Newport-based Paul Fosh Auctions who is handling the sale. “The distinctive property is close to the sea wall and the Severn Estuary. The city of Newport is approximately seven km distance with its wide range of amenities and shopping facilities including the Friars Walk shopping centre.
“The M4 is easily accessible, offering easy access for commuters to both Cardiff and Bristol especially. The church along with some sixty other properties are being offered for sale at Paul Fosh Auctions with bidding starting on Tuesday February 1 and ending from 5pm on Thursday February 3.
