One does not simply pick up one of the books Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz and expect their lives to stay the same. He is the master of the paradigm shift, and he knows the avenues to his readers’ souls.
Considered to be one of the first contemporary writers of Arabic literature, Mahfouz won the 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature. Throughout his lifetime, Mahfouz has published 34 novels, over 350 short stories, dozens of movie scripts and five plays over a 70-year career, many of which have been made into Egyptian and foreign films.
Today is the 10th anniversary of Mahfouz’s death. But his legacy lives on.
Here’s a few of Mahfouz’s quotes to live by:
1. “Home is not where you were born. Home is where all your attempts to escape cease.”
4. “As for life’s tragedies, our love will defeat them. Love is the most effective cure. In the crevices of disasters, happiness lies like a diamond in a mind, so let us instill in ourselves the wisdom of love.”
6. “The Arab world also won the Nobel with me. I believe that international doors have opened, and that from now on, literate people will consider Arab literature also. We deserve that recognition.”
