The main part of the 2020 EUROPA Stamps have now been issued, and today we are taking a look at a few of our favorite ones from this year's selection.

The common theme for 2020 is "Ancient Postal Routes", and hence we will be looking back in time with this year's EUROPA stamps. We will start with the wonderful souvenir sheet below.

The souvenir sheet was issued by the Danish postal service, and consists of three stamps, where the two of them carry the common EUROPA seal in the top right corner. The two EUROPA stamps depict Copenhagen and Hamburg, respectively, as these were the starting and ending points for the very first postal route in Denmark.

The route marked the birth of the Danish postal service, and it was initiated by the Danish King Christian IV, who started the postal service by Royal decree in 1624. At that time, the postal service consisted of nine postal routes, with the Copenhagen-Hamburg route being by far the most important one.

The souvenir sheet depicts a map of Denmark in the background, along with a recreation of the Royal decree. The two stamps, featuring some of the popular features of the city they depict, are accompanied by a third stamp, depicting one of the horseback-riding postal couriers - the very first Danish mailmen.

The two EUROPA stamps are denominated at 30.00 DKK, and the last stamp is denominated at 10.00 DKK. The souvenir sheet can be purchased with Nordfrim

Although the trip from Copenhagen to Hamburg must have been long on horseback, it doesn't even compare to the tough environment that the mailmen had to deal with in the Faroe Islands. The two EUROPA stamps from the Faroe Islands depict the harsh conditions faced in the mountainous country.

Both of the stamps consist of a map that shows an ancient postal route. The first stamp shows the route from Klaksvik to Viðareiði, and just by looking at the illustration next to the map, you can see that it was a tough route. The illustration highlights a specific situation in the 1890s, where two mailmen were crossing a mountain on the route, when they got caught in a massive snow storm. As they had no way of getting off the mountain in time, they tried to find shelter, by building a stone wall to hide behind. Because of the immense cold, the mailmen had to stay active, so they ended up building up and tearing down the stone wall all night long, just to keep themselves warm. As soon as dawn broke, they managed to safely get off the mountain.

The second stamp depicts one of the ships used for transporting mail between the islands. The ship in the image was used for a number of years as the primary means of transportation between two of the main islands, and it was in use up until 1965, when a larger ferry was commissioned. The ship in the stamp was called Olavur named after the very first postmaster on this particular route, who died in 1947, when his boat sank during a storm in the rough sea.

The stamps are denominated at 17.00 DKK, and can be purchased at Nordfrim.

In Liechtenstein, the ancient postal routes were frequented by the original Lindau Messenger service - a postal service that travelled between the cities of Lindau and Milan, passing through Liechtenstein on the way

The two stamps are kept in grey scales, only broken by the yellow color that is used to highlight specific details in the stamps, such as the bag carried by the mailman on horseback, the side of the stagecoach, and the postal horn depicted in the lower right part of the stamps.

The two stamps depict a mailman on horseback, traveling the Lindau-Milan route, as well as a stagecoach transporting both mail and passengers between the two cities. The stamps are issued as part of a souvenir sheet, and the sheet itself depicts the waterfront of Lindau, where the entrance to the harbor is flanked by a beautiful lighthouse on one side, and a sculpture on the other side. Here, a ship is depicted as it is leaving the harbor, entering Lake Constance.

The stamps are both denominated at 1.50 CHF, and can be purchased from Nordfrim

In Norway, this year's EUROPA stamp depicts the enormously beautiful Vindhella Road, which was part of an ancient postal route, connecting Bergen and Oslo, formerly known as Christiania. The original route lead straight over a mountain pass, and it was a troubling trip to make for the mailmen, as they had to carry mailbags on their backs, and had to suffer a steep incline and decline.

In 1793, the Vindhella Road was upgraded to an actual road that supposedly allowed for horse carriages. Although the road was well-constructed, the incline was too steep for horseback riding, and hence it had to be re-upgraded.

In the 1840s, the road was renewed, and an extra turn was added, to flatten out the incline of the road. Although the road is still tremendously steep, it is much better now, than the previous solution. The road is an architectural and engineering masterpiece, and today the Vindhella Road is counted as one of the most beautiful places to visit in Norway. Seeing the beauty of the area, it makes perfect sense that the stamp is simply an image of the area, depicting the beautiful and well-constructed road that twists through the wilderness, among the mountains. It is truly stunning.

The stamp is issued in a wonderful souvenir sheet, which you can buy directly from Nordfrim.

Finally, let's take a look at this wonderful souvenir sheet issued by the postal service of Guernsey. The sheet consists of six stamp depicting mail ships throughout history - two of the stamps are part of the EUROPA stamps series, and the remaining four are regular Guernsey stamps.

Before aircrafts, the only way for Guernsey to stay in contact with the rest of the world, was through sailing. So it makes perfect sense that Guernsey have decided to highlight the use fo mailships throughout history in their EUROPA stamps. The stamps in the issue range from the Earl of Chesterfield, which was the first mailship to carry mail between Guernsey and England, to the Sarnia, the largest and most modern mailship to service the Channel Islands, which entered the service in 1961.

It is clear to see the evolution of shipping and sailing, when comparing the ships throughout time, and several of the ships are quite impressive in their own right. The souvenir sheet depicts the harbor of Guernsey, with a ferry entering the harbor at the time of the photo.

The stamps are denominated between 50p and £1.02, and the sheet can be purchased directly with Nordfrim

As always, some of the postal services are coming up with creative ideas for the EUROPA stamps, and that is definitely the case for Finland - they have chosen to display Santa Claus! You can see the stamp here.
